I could of course set the sleep timer for any other duration (for a long time I had it at 60 minutes). 23:00 is the beginning of "inactive" time for the desktop.

I was worried 30 minutes might be too short an interval (updates often take longer than that if I do them manually in the middle of the day) but so far I have seen no sign that any update has failed to install in that situation.
Provided the desktop machine is asleep before 23:00, it wakes up about 3 minutes after 23:00 if any non-optional updates are on offer, installs them, and goes back to sleep 30 minutes later.

Am I correct in thinking that should be the subject of a separate thread? and if so, in which forum?Īd #10 - Service agreements using the Registry? Are those things I signed off on for the original operating system (Windows 7 Pro) at the time of purchase? Part of Activation?Īd #9 - I am not having problems with system powering itself off? I do have it set to "sleep" after 30 minutes of inactivity (could set any other time, see below).Īd #8 - I am not AFAIK having any trouble at all with Windows Updates. I have a slowness-related question about possibly obsolete or no longer useful installed apps, and other things that may or may not need to be running in the background. Desktop and laptop now both seem to be operating normally, not sure whether a bit sluggish or not. AFAIK those also ran on YouTube.Īfter successful restart today, installed preview CU KB5009596 on both computers, as per BC recommendation this morning. I have also in the now fairly distant past watched NPR videos, for instance the "Now hear this" series, about composers whose music I also know well (Scarlatti, Bach, etc.). I have been a serious pianist and very fond of Beethoven piano sonatas, especially the late ones, so it interests me to listen to how other pianists play them - with the score in hand, or displayed on the screen (I have myself played nearly all the Beethoven sonatas, so I know most of them pretty well). The only "Broadcast" things I listen to on this computer are YouTube music performances. To forestall one obvious question: no new updates, other than MS Defender "security intelligence" ones, were installed last night, or for at least a couple of preceding days. This morning thanks to exceeding slowness I was able to see it. I'd noticed this blocking in less dramatic form for recent weeks, holding up restart for only some seconds, and could not decipher what the app was. Probably took me 20 minutes to get to a restart - and there was an app blocking the restart. In fact I had tried to open several different ones, and several instances of one, before they all appeared one on top of another on the screen. This morning I noted my desktop computer was extremely slow - much more than usual.
Internet service by local wireless broadband provider via Comcast backbone, speeds marginal due to distance from wireless relay station.
It's on a WiFi home network with a Dell laptop (similar age, same Win 10 version & build), a Canon printer, a Samsung smartphone.
